Become an AYSO Region 359 Volunteer
Help create a safe, fun, and positive soccer experience for every player.
Why Volunteers Matter
AYSO Region 359 depends on dedicated volunteers to make our season possible. Our coaches, assistant coaches, referees, team volunteers, and board members help create a quality soccer program built on safety, fun, positive coaching, and player development.
Volunteers are the reason AYSO continues to provide meaningful youth soccer opportunities for players and families in our community.
We Need You
We are always looking for volunteers to help in roles such as:
- Board Members
- Coaches
- Assistant Coaches
- Referees
- Team Volunteers
- Division and Field Support Roles
Why Volunteer?
Support Your Child and Community
Volunteering gives you the opportunity to spend quality time with your child while helping build a strong, supportive community for all players and families.
No Experience Necessary
AYSO provides free training and certification for coaches, referees, and many other volunteer roles. You do not need previous experience to get started.
Safe Haven Focus
AYSO’s Safe Haven program helps create a safe, positive environment for both children and volunteers through required training, screening, and clear protection policies.
Flexible Ways to Help
There are many ways to volunteer, from coaching and refereeing to helping on picture day, supporting events, or taking on administrative roles that can even be done from home.
Youth Opportunities
Teens ages 12 and up can volunteer too, giving them a chance to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and gain meaningful experience through service.

How to Become an AYSO Volunteer
The basic process is similar for all volunteer roles. The main difference is the training required for each position.
- Register or re-register as an AYSO volunteer each year.
- Select the soccer program and volunteer role you want.
- Complete your volunteer application.
- Complete your background check if required.
- Finish the required online training courses.
- Complete any role-specific in-person training if needed.
- Verify that your training credits have been properly recorded.
Step 1: Register Every Year
All volunteers must register each year, even if they have volunteered before.
Examples of volunteer roles include:
- Referee
- Youth Referee
- Coach
- Assistant Coach
- Team Manager
Team volunteers typically sign up under the Fall program and then choose the role that best fits their interests.
How to Sign Up for a Role
- Log in to your account on the Region website.
- Click the Volunteer icon in your account panel.
- Select Find New Roles.
- Choose the soccer program, such as Fall season registration.
- Click View Divisions and select a division.
- Click View Selected Opportunities.
- Choose the volunteer role you want and complete the application.
Required Training for All Volunteers
Most volunteers must complete the following required training:
- AYSO Safe Haven – annually
- CDC Concussion Course – every two years
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest – once
Additional Requirements for Adults and Volunteers Age 18+
- Volunteer background check through Sterling Volunteers
- SafeSport training
- Live Scan fingerprinting, as required in California youth sports
Background Check Information
Adult volunteers complete an annual background check through Sterling Volunteers. Youth volunteers do not complete a background check and will show a different risk status in the system.
After signing up as a volunteer, you should receive an email from Sterling Volunteers with instructions. When asked for payment, choose Pay Later so the Region can cover the fee.
Volunteers should monitor their risk status and renew it when required.
Role-Specific Training
Each volunteer role has its own AYSO training pathway. Coaches, referees, and other volunteers will complete different courses depending on their responsibilities.
Training begins in AYSOU / ETrainU. Volunteers can use the Training Library to find new courses and the My Training section to continue courses already in progress.
Some courses require pre-requisites, and some roles also require in-person companion training.
Important Reminder
It is your responsibility to verify that your course credits and certifications have been recorded correctly in ETrainU. Do not assume that completion is automatic. Check your training record after completing courses and follow up quickly if something is missing.
